SEPIA, Olfactive Studio's new collection is born. The fragrance is an inaugural trilogy of Extrait de Parfum created in collaboration with Bertrand Duchaufour - the perfumer behind Woody Mood -, and English-born environmental artist, sculptor and photographer, Martin Hill, author of the photographs that inspired each Extrait de Parfum.

In Vanilla Shot, an arch made with thin pieces of sculpted wood connected by floating flax threads above the Wanaka Lake in New Zealand evokes the slender and elongated shape of vanilla beans: A composition that bespeaks extreme balance and tension.
Essential and oriental, Vanilla Shot boasts a fresh and sensual richness that blossoms thanks to myrrh resin. The fragrance is energized by top notes of coriander, saffron and aldehydes and enhanced by the presence of rose and dried fruits.

Chypre Shot starts with a rich and mysterious chypre accord. Set on a bed of moss on Mount Taranaki – a nod to the fragrance's oakmoss heart note - a circle of small volcanic rocks triggers a chromatic event between the green landscape and the overhead haze.

Dark and primal, Chypre Shot boasts a powerful and original chypre accord with a revisited accord of oakmoss amidst a playful association of notes of patchouli, peony, black pepper, and coffee.

Leather Shot is inspired by a pristine picture of dark brown sand whose grain evokes leather: a sign that emerges on the surface of earth and water like a small stream that merges with the ocean on the West coast of New Zealand's North Island; a captivating presence for a deep-seated yet subtle fragrance.

Leathery and organic, Leather Shot is a woody, smoky, and spicy leather supported by the powdery elegance of iris, cedarwood, and driftwood notes.

Bertrand Duchaufour
Perfumer

An artist to the core, Bertrand has always created his fragrances using various forms of media such as drawing, painting, and photography. He started his career in perfumery at Lautier Florasynth in Grasse, then Paris. In 2008, he became a freelance perfumer and branched out into artistic fragrances, composing innovative creations. He has been working with the Technicoflor fragrance company since 2014, which he chose for its ethical and environmental commitments.

Martin Hill 
Photographer

Martin Hill is an internationally awarded environmental artist & photographer (Land Art). Martin Hill and Philippa Jones live and work together surrounded by mountains and lakes in Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand, travelling widely to explore wild places where they work directly with nature.

Their sculptures are a response to the environment from which they are made and to which they return. They use natural materials gathered from the site so that, after Hill photographs the works, they can be absorbed back into the natural cycle without harm.

Through multiple forms of publishing and exhibiting his story and environmental sculpture photographs have reached a wide audience. Earth to Earth, a book of their sculptures was published in 2007 that linked writings by eminent scientists, designers and business leaders with his photographs.

 

The Concept
Olfactive Studio

Photography and perfume capture the moment and rekindle the memory of past experiences. Imagining a sensorial, intimate, and poetic relationship between images and scents is to reconcile temporal spaces.

«Perfumer’s proofs», born out of the spontaneous and free emotions of perfume creators who have carte blanche when it comes to photography, prove to be genuine olfactory concepts. These original, never-smelled-before olfactory creations with strong personalities are made with very beautiful raw materials and come in Eau de parfum versions (12 to 18%) without price constraints. Elegant and unconventional modernity emanates from this wonderful alchemy. Olfactive Studio has designed an exceptional olfactory world with a powerful and distinctive personality; a world of intuitions and emotions; a world designed for women, men, and all others. Perfumes are angels; they have no gender, but they have a soul.

Together, talented perfumers and photographers have created Autoportrait (2011), Chambre Noire (2011), Still Life (2011), Lumière Blanche (2012), Flash Back (2013), Ombre Indigo (2014), Panorama (2015), Still LIfe in Rio (2016), Close Up (2016) and Woody Mood (2017) and the Sepia Collection (2018)

The Creator
Olfactive Studio

Céline Verleure is a passionate French perfume creator. She grew up close to nature. Dreaming of becoming an architect, she drew and invented her world. Having taken up studies in marketing, she gave up on building houses, but it allowed her access to the House of Kenzo. Pierre Broc, the creator of Kenzo fragrances, taught her the profession of perfume creation: he became her mentor. At 28, she created Kenzo Jungle with perfumers Dominique Ropion and Jean-Louis Sieuzac and then l’Eau par Kenzo with Olivier Cresp. She then launched Osmoz.com for perfume enthusiasts, based on an original idea by Firmenich. Céline’s passion is fueled by her travels: she took up Japanese calligraphy in Tokyo and spent months at a time in India – she loved Pondicherry and the intensity of the subcontinent. Departing from Cape Verde, she sailed across the Atlantic, traveled around South America, and fell in love with Rio de Janeiro where she lived for 2 years, importing French wines to the delight of the Cariocas. But she missed creating perfumes so she decided to launch the «the blog of the fragrance that doesn’t exist (yet)!» to tempt fate and to give birth to a new brand, thanks to the collective intuitions of an online community (over 5,600 fans participated in the creation of Olfactive Studio).
